The Recording Academy's introduction of a new category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, for the 69th Grammy Awards has sparked a wave of criticism across social media, particularly from BTS ARMY

While some people see the category as a form of recognition for the growing influence of Asian music worldwide, many ARMYs believe it does the exact opposite.

Across X and Instagram, fans have been expressing frustration, arguing that the move separates globally successful Asian artists from competing alongside Western acts in major Grammy categories. Some fan reactions have gone viral, with many claiming the category is just segregation disguised as inclusion.

Back in 2020 and 2021, BTS received Grammy nominations for their hits Dynamite and Butter respectively. Despite their record-breaking achievements and popularity, BTS did not win either award. The losses triggered a major backlash from fans. ARMYs accused the Grammys of using BTS to boost ratings, attract viewers, and generate social media engagement without properly recognising their achievements.

Now, in 2026, the controversy has resurfaced. BTS's comeback album Arirang and its lead single Swim have dominated charts worldwide and broken various records. With BTS once again proving their ability to compete with major Western artists, many fans question the timing of the new Asian pop category.

The backlash is also tied to long-standing allegations that the Grammys have faced regarding xenophobia and racial bias. Many ARMYs have also pointed to BTS's song Aliens from Arirang; the track addresses xenophobia, cultural misunderstandings, and the outsider status BTS experienced as a Korean act breaking into a Western-dominated music industry.

According to critics, creating a separate category risks limiting Asian artists to a designated space rather than allowing them to compete equally in major categories. BTS has already demonstrated they belong in those conversations and that a separate category could sideline their global impact.
