LIVING ROOFS: COOLER HOMES, GREENER COMMUNITIES

In Hyderabad’s blazing summer, a green roof isn’t just stylish — it’s smart. Also known as a living roof, this natural cover helps lower indoor temperatures by 2–5°C, significantly reducing energy bills. It softens the urban heat island effect, filters dust from the air, reduces noise, and transforms a harsh concrete surface into a lush garden — often attracting birds and butterflies too.

At Arbor Road Estate, we transformed a flat, sun-scorched roof into a thriving green space. The concrete slab was structurally sound and had withstood several monsoons without leaking. We began by laying drain cell mats — tough, interlocking panels that manage water flow and form the base layer.

Over this, we spread geotextile fabric to retain the soil while allowing water to pass through. Then came three inches of a nutrient-rich soil mix composed of red soil, gobar (cow dung), rice husk, biochar, and an organic soil enhancer that also acts as a natural pesticide.

Finally, we laid a layer of carpet grass, which comes in small sections that can be rolled out with ease.

The transformation was instant — from a hot slab to a cool, breathing, green retreat. The room below remained comfortable all summer with just ceiling fans.
At a time when heat and pollution are on the rise, green roofs aren’t just beautiful — they are essential. Want to cool your home, save energy, and make a statement? Start at the top!
