At Cannes 2025, director Om Raut unveiled his most ambitious project yet—Kalam: The Missile Man of India, a biopic on the legendary Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Starring Dhanush in the titular role, the film promises to be a stirring tribute to the scientist, teacher, and former president. Raut shared insights into the project, his personal connection to Kalam’s legacy, and why Dhanush was the ideal actor to embody the icon

Speaking about his deep-rooted inspiration, Raut revealed, "The teachings of Dr. Kalam are instilled in every youth. I read his book Wings of Fire when I was in college, and I can say that everything I am doing today, and everything I aspire to be, is inspired by the teachings in that book. It changed my perspective on life, and that is exactly why I am standing here today."
The director went on to highlight the three pillars of Kalam’s life that shaped the film’s narrative: "First is education—he was a great teacher who placed immense value on quality learning. Second is innovation—particularly indigenous innovation. He encouraged us to develop within our country. And the third is resilience—the willpower to stay committed to our purpose."
Raut also shared how the project came together, crediting producer Abhishek Agarwal (The Kashmir Files, Parmanu) for approaching him with the idea. "When he asked if I’d be interested, I told him I was already working on something similar," Raut recalled. With T-Series and Bhushan Kumar joining forces, the film is now set to be a major cinematic event.

On casting Dhanush, Raut was emphatic, "I don’t think there could have been a better choice than Dhanush to bring this spiritual and intellectual depth to life on screen. He is the perfect fit." The actor, known for his versatility, will portray Kalam’s journey—from his humble beginnings in Rameswaram to becoming India’s beloved ‘Missile Man’ and president.
Penned by Saiwyn Quadras (Neerja, Maidaan), the biopic aims to be more than just a retelling—it’s a celebration of leadership, innovation, and integrity. As anticipation builds, Kalam: The Missile Man of India is poised to ignite inspiration, much like the man himself.
A cinematic homage to a visionary, the film is set to capture not just Kalam’s achievements, but the essence of his teachings—proving that his legacy continues to guide generations.
